Some were focused on keeping their momentum going, some were tired and enduring, some were fatigued and cranky.

You, you were laughing and obviously just enjoying time in the woods on a bike.Michael R pdxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07842366368669547609noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3365212743409947479.post-47364067007566523932010-09-22T16:08:06.026-07:002010-09-22T16:08:06.026-07:00Brad-

I'd love to go for a ride with you sometime. Give me a week or so, as I have the little matter of a quick trip down to Klamath Falls this weekend.

And yes, that was indeed me in BQ.

I ran the numbers, and the ride you guys did was actually only like 700' less climbing than the original route. The original route does the extra pass, but you don't really lose *that* much elevation from McKenzie Pass down to Sisters, and you do lose a bunch between Marion Forks and Detroit. So that's encouraging, in the sense that the original route probably wouldn't have defeated anyone who managed to get through this one.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09343368034173586183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3365212743409947479.post-25921708215053970882010-09-21T22:07:19.374-07:002010-09-21T22:07:19.374-07:00Hoping that you read back on your comments:
Susan...Hoping that you read back on your comments:

Susan, sure I picked up that you are a great planner but frankly, when you mentioned route profile, I started mentally kicking myself. "What?! Four passes and not just two?" The NFD's were quite a surprise but they were much more positive than their gradient would otherwise dictate.

Michael, what? You don't live in Oregon? I hope you live in Seattle because I would love to ride with you some. It was a complete blast to ride and I'm so, so glad that you were there making everyone feel at home. Also, is that you in the newest BQ on the recumbent? It may be a silly question but I was curious.bradhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08446559369990216386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3365212743409947479.post-6279324807692292352010-09-21T17:39:36.217-07:002010-09-21T17:39:36.217-07:00Congratulations on your first 600 and your first S...Congratulations on your first 600 and your first SR! You rode very strong, I was really impressed. I was tickled to see you come in at the overnight and at the end, not beaten down at all, but enthusiastic. That was my reaction after I pre-rode it, too.

Nice shot of NFD 22 at the beginning; that was a truly beautiful road. That pavement was heavenly. I think the real reason you don't get so many roads like that in northern WA is because the northern Cascades are so much more rugged than the Oregon Cascades. If you ride highway 20 or the mountain loop highway, the hillsides go straight up. The grades are much more gentle in Oregon. It's like that in southern WA, too, and the Gifford Pinchot also has lots of nice forest roads to ride.

Sorry about the expense of the ride; it costs a lot to run something so remote, and there's a 2 night minimum stay at the cabins in Camp Yale.

I'll hopefully run this ride again, but not until I move back to Oregon, so 3 or 4 years. Maybe next time we'll get to send riders over McKenzie Pass, which was a real treat.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09343368034173586183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3365212743409947479.post-85436114446353930082010-09-20T11:13:00.607-07:002010-09-20T11:13:00.607-07:00Brad - great write-up!
Tho, I wouldn't say ...Brad - great write-up!

Tho, I wouldn't say I laughed *at* you for not consulting the elevation profile. I'd say it was more of an appreciative chuckle. :-) As someone who obsesses over the details, particularly so when I did *my* first 600 earlier in the year, I was actually pretty impressed that you were confident enough to be able to bite off a ride this big without worrying about the profile! Great job on finishing so strong.Susan Otcenashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09904095842697556879noreply@blogger.com
